NYC Beauty Haul

Because I missed out on buying liquid beauty products last time around in NYC, I really stocked up this time.

At the airport in Seattle, killing time before our flight ultimately got cancelled, I rediscovered an old favourite, The Body Shop's hemp hand cream. My hands were seriously suffering and I forgot to pack hand cream. The airport store had a whole bunch of holiday sets left over at 50% off, so I picked up three small sized hand creams (Hemp, Rose and Almond) for $12. On the way to our gate, I noticed that Sea-tac has a Butter London boutique. I was really surprised, and wish I wandered a little further instead of sitting in the food court for an hour! I was looking for Black Knight, which was sold out, so I picked up the colour-shifting Knackered instead.

I heard about Intelligent Nutrients through Into The Gloss, and wanted to try out some of their products. I bought mine at Barney's, but I also saw them at ABC Carpet and Home. My face mist by Caudalie and shampoo and conditioner from Kérastase is almost empty, so I bought the Anti-Aging Mist and the Harmonic shampoo and conditioner from Intelligent Nutrients.

Two other things I got at Barney's were from the Japanese makeup and skincare line Koh Gen Do. Another Into The Gloss recommendation! I got the Moisture Concealer palette and the Maifanshi Makeup Color Base in Yellow.

A few weeks ago Koh Gen Do's website was having a 20% off sale, so I decided to order a foundation sight unseen, which as you could imagine is quite dangerous. I just took a wild guess that I would be the lightest shade, and I was right! I got the Aqua Foundation in PK-0 and also the Maifanshi Face Powder, which is basically a loose translucent setting powder. To say I was impressed with the formula of this foundation is an understatement. I wanted to test the colour, so I spread a little bit over my dried-up scaly hand skin and it immediately smoothed out and became incredibly soft. It's my new favourite foundation and I highly recommend you try it out if you can!

I'm loving Koh Gen Do so much that I picked up the Maifanshi Moisture Foundation at Sephora in the Meat Packing District, and plan to order their Fresh Face cheek colour and Maifanshi lip gloss soon.

At Aesop in Nolita, I picked up the Geranium Leaf Body Scrub and the Tuberose Lip Heal. I previously used Origin's Incredible Spreadable Ginger Scrub (it smells amazing!) but that ran out and I wanted to try something new. Also, my lips have been seriously dry and I've therefore been obsessed with curing them with all sorts of products. The Rosehip Seed Lip Treatment is a blend of oils that you apply morning and night with a little roller-ball applicator to condition and heal dry lips.

Two other things I bought were the Leonor Greyl Lait Luminescence Bi-Phase detangling milk. I really love this product and mine had about two sprays left. It's expensive, but mine lasted me an entire year. Last but not least, as I blogged previously, I picked up Chanel's new June varnish, perfect for spring.

I must say, New York is ideal for stocking up on hard-to-find beauty products. I don't think there are many brands you can't find in that city!

I'm trying to cut back on my nail polish purchases, so I just picked up one of the new varnishes from Chanel's Spring 2012 collection: June. It reminded me of the peach from Ann Demeulemeester's Spring 2009, and I don't have anything else like it in my stash, so win-win.

NYC - 2

There was a great deal on a flight to NYC flying out of Seattle, so J and I headed there over this past weekend.

Of course, a rare pacific northwest snow storm had to hit the exact same day that we needed to drive down for our early next morning flight.

We drove down slowly and safely. Then the freezing rain came. Our car and the roads were coated with at least a 1/4" of solid ice. Things aren't looking so good for the Sea-tac airport. The next morning we headed to the airport anyway, where our flight was delayed, delayed again, bumped up a half hour earlier, and then cancelled.

Instead of getting re-booked and waiting until the following day when we may or may not fly out (and would also have to foot the bill for another night at the over-booked airport hotel), thus losing an entire day in NYC, we negotiated a flight out of Vancouver that left in 4 hours. With the roads in the condition that they were, we weren't sure if we were going to make it.

Miraculously, we make it to Vancouver without dying once, passing about 10 cars in the ditch or crashed into things along the I-5. We dump the car in the long-term lot, rushed onto the shuttle to the airport and checked-in for our flight.

The desk agent in Seattle booked us on the flight leaving the next day. Of course.

We manage to get on the flight leaving that day (in less than an hour) and finally get into NYC around midnight.

But there was 1 more problem.

Our return flight flies into Seattle and our car in in Vancouver.

Re-routing or tacking on an extra flight to Vancouver (or even to Bellingham) will cost $250-500 each.

Our flight back into Seattle was supposed to arrive at 9pm, but we were 45 minutes late. We rented a car from Seattle (stoped at McDonalds for chicken nuggets and a Filet-O-Fish) and drove to Vancouver, picked up our car from the airport, and finally drive home. It's about 4:30am GMT by this point, and I could barely keep my eyes open. Hats off to J for driving 95% of the time and not killing us once.

Conclusion:

Trip to NYC: always worth it.

Flying out of Seattle? Never again.

I'm a big fan of lipstick though I am not always motivated enough to wear it. I prefer to apply lipstick with a brush, and many of my lesser-worn lipsticks from MAC just sit around so I wondered if there was a way I could de-pot them (or de-stick them as it were) to save space, keep them organized, and also recycle them at MAC for free products.

The little acrylic pots from Muji (or similar) are the perfect solution! You can get a stacking set of 5 for about $5 in the US (I picked mine up in New York), or £2.50 ordered online, if you don't live near a Muji store. FYI, you can order internationally from the UK Muji website! I've done it before without problems. If you don't have a Muji nearby (like me) and don't want to order online, check at beauty supply stores, craft stores and dollar stores for something similar. If you have a Daiso store near you I'm pretty sure they have something like this.

It's pretty straight forward if you want to de-pot your lipsticks, and also weirdly satisfying to cut through a lipstick like they do in the magazines.

- decide which lipsticks to de-pot. I only did the ones that I don't normally wear very often and wouldn't take out with me to reapply, though theoretically you could take apart the stack and use the lid from the top pot if you need to take one with you.

- clean an exacto knife with alcohol

- slice through the stick horizontally right at the bottom and pop it into the container

- there will be a little bit more left in the plastic holder that you can scrape out if you like

- remove the sticker from the bottom of the tube and place it on the bottom of your clear pot. If it doesn't come off easily with the edge of your blade, you can place it on a hot flat iron for a few seconds to melt the glue a little bit

- fill all your containers and trundle off to MAC to recycle them.

At MAC you can recycle any 6 plastic MAC containers (empty or not) for a free eyeshadow, lipgloss or new lipstick. I've heard this recycling policy varies per store (freestanding vs pro store vs store-in-store) but at my local free-standing MAC pro store you can recycle for any one of those three options. Best and Worst of 2011

Now that it's officially 2012, it's a great time to reflect on my wardrobe purchases of 2011 and assess the best and worst.

Despite spring being a time I don't really make a lot of purchases, the fact that I was in Paris for part of the season inevitably gave me more opportunities to buy some great things at great prices. At the two sample sales I hit in Paris and Antwerp, I made some purchases of useful things, and also things I have wanted for a while but couldn't afford at full retail.

At the Damir Doma sample sale I bought two items which have since been indispensable to me: a pair of spiral stitched leggings and spiral stitched long sleeve jersey top.

At the Ann Demeulemeester sample sale, two notable finds included a bird-printed chiffon cardigan and a pinwheel patterned drawstring skirt which have been great layering pieces.

Top purchases of fall probably include my new Ann Demeulemeester coat and Zam Barrett Siamese bag. The coat was one of my first purchases of fall (back in August I think?) and the bag was one of my last of the year. I was in a bit of a handbag predicament, until one somewhat fell from the sky... well, a sample sale deal came along.

Three other top purchases are my easy throw-on items: Alexander Wang Ashley boots, perfect for making a quick trip to the grocery store or shopping all day with my mother, my (second hand) Balenciaga leather jacket (finally!), and a second-hand Barbour coat. While not really my style at all, it is the perfect dog park coat and I like to pretend to be the Queen Mum in it. I don't really care what I look like at the dog park- I wear duck boots and Sorel's and have dogs jump on me with their muddy paws. Enough said.

Regrets include things that showed up not fitting as expected, or not fitting at all. They were pretty few and far between, and I only had one or two inexpensive "WTF was I thinking" purchase, so I think I did pretty well on that front.

I am still obsessed with Ann Demeulemeester Spring 2011- the white on white on white is so startling without feeling clinical or cold. I'm a huge fan of one colour head-to-toe and I'd like to give this white on white business a go this spring/summer. I especially like how all these runway looks were created with similar pieces.

I've broken the images down and come out with 10 items:

1. vest (with cross-strap)
2. sleeveless twist/drape top
3. wide quilted belt
4. mini skirt with wide quilted waistband
5. long side cut-out skirt
6. half-vest with horizontal straps

This is probably enough items to wear head-to-toe white every day in the spring and summer, which is kind of an interesting "futuristic" idea to me. I recently read this great Vanity Fair article about the devolution of fashion and dressing. It got me thinking about the future, and also the past's idea of the future. What will we dress like in 100 years? I like to think (or hope) it will look like a scene out of The Fifth Element.

Also, all-white outfits make me think of Oskar in Jonathan Safran Foer's book Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, which incidentally I discovered was turned into a movie that comes out this January. Great book, hopefully the movie will live up to it.

The last few days I've had a bit of a surge of energy. I have a lot of work to do right now and instead of procrastinating like normal, I'm actually doing it. And look, I've even taken a rare outfit photo! Plus, I'm pleased that all my Christmas shopping is already done, but now my mother is sending me out on missions to look for gifts for her! I don't mind though. I seem to be in the Christmas spirit more so than any year before in my adult life. I've already brought out the tree decorations and am eager to go buy a fresh tree. I am partial to the Alpine Fir, for their well spaced branches and minimal look. I'm not sure where this positive energy is coming from but I'm hoping it stays for a while and I don't jinx it by posting about it here!

Rick Owens Pillbox jacket, now on sale at Barney's. I loved these jackets from the moment I saw them on the runway. The stiff structured shoulders and mix of leather and wool really appeals to me.

MA+ Leather Fingerless Gloves. These would look great under a wool coat, and I love the spiral buttons and peek of cotton lining.

Rick Owens Book. This book is jumbo sized and filled with the world of Rick Owens. Enough said.

Maison Martin Margiela Oversized Snow Globe. Instant Christmas, jumbo-sized, but I think it would look great all year round.

Byredo Accord Oud. I'm obsessed with this scent for fall/winter and have been meaning to pick this up.

Diptyque Baies Indoor/Outdoor Candle. There seems to be an over-sized theme going on in this list, as this candle is a whopping 51.2oz. 150 hours of fun!

Diptyque Philosykos Shower Gel. I got a little sample of this in New York and the scent is amazing. Now I know what all the fuss is about! The shower gel is a little luxury for bath time.

I'm thrilled that my Christmas shopping is almost done, and it's still the beginning of December! The only thing left to do is my charity donations, which usually includes the Firefighter Burn Fund (for my Dad), Doctors Without Borders (for my brother) and the SPCA (for Santos)

When everything runs out at once

This always seems to happen to me. All my skincare products always seem to run out at the same time, no matter when I purchased them. This always results in a cringing realization that I have to shell out for a few all at once, when it's much easier on my mind and my wallet to space purchases out.

I've solved my running out of products problem with my desire to try out Aesop. I wanted to pick up a few things from their store in New York when I was there, but went back and forth on wanting to check a bag for an extra charge or just carrying it on. Damn those extra fees! In the end I didn't end up getting anything from Aesop, or a new perfume (it was going to be Byredo or Le Labo), nor did I pick up a tube of Embryolisse that I desperately needed. I still had "issues" getting my bag to shut so perhaps that was a good thing.

I ended up ordering Aesop's Camellia Nut Facial Hydrating Cream to replace my Embryolisse cream, the Parsley Seed Anti-Oxidant Serum to replace my Darphin Mat Serum, and their Fabulous Face Oil to replace my dwindling supply of Darphin's Chamomile Dry Oil.

I can't wait to give them a go. If you've tried Aesop, how do you find them? Do their products do what they say they do?

For the past, oh... 3+ months I've had a bit of sartorial apathy. It's been all jeans/basic sweater or jeans/t-shirt for a while now. Yesterday I decided to sort through my fall accessories (gloves, scarves, etc) and decided to put some effort into getting dressed, even if I was only going to get my roots coloured. Plus, it finally felt cold enough to pull out this puffy jacket I bought back in Jan/Feb and didn't get a chance to wear. I had bought it on ebay right before I left for Paris and once I got back to Vancouver it was spring, so it's been waiting in the wings for some cold weather. It kind of makes me feel like a beetle. The scarf is also new, a gift from J for my birthday (I love it so much!)

When J and I were in Paris, we took a road trip to Normandy, Saint-Malo and Mont Saint-Michel

It's pretty surreal to stand on the same ground where so much happened. I've been watching a lot of war documentaries lately, especially this past week before Remembrance Day. I used to hate watching any movies dealing with war because it was too emotional, but it's important not to forget or to avoid things that are uncomfortable to watch.

Pointe du Hoc was probably the most mind blowing for me.

"Before the 5th Ranger Battalion landing on Dog White sector on Omaha Beach, during the Invasion of Normandy, the 2nd Ranger Battalion scaled the 150-foot (46 m) cliffs of Pointe du Hoc, a few miles to the west, to destroy a six-gun battery of captured French Canon de 155 mm GPF guns. Under constant fire during the climb, they encountered only a small company of Germans on the cliffs and the artillery withdrawn some 500 meters. The guns were later found and destroyed, and the Rangers cut and held the main road for two days before being relieved."

Youth: Finding fashion in all places

As a young person living in the suburbs in the early 90s, options for clothing were limited, and my shopping excursion opportunities were limited too. There was the local mall with a few chain stores popular in the 90s, the department stores, and does anyone remember Karuba? Horrible. Also, there was The Body Shop, where me and my friends would collect those "statement/slogan" t-shirts along with colourful scented soaps, bath beads and endlessly bathe ourselves in Vanilla perfume. If I was lucky, my mother would take me to the mall one suburb over that had Club Monaco (remember those logo sweatshirts?!). Plus, being young my mother wouldn't take me shopping whenever I had a whim for a new babydoll t-shirt, so I needed to be creative when let free in a retail environment.

A lot of my "shopping" trips would consist of my parents dragging my brother and I to all sorts of uninteresting stores where I would inevitably find something to incorporate into my wardrobe. I wasn't about to let a shopping excursion go unfulfilled, no matter how obtuse the store was. I would find sweaters and outerwear from Eddie Bauer, marled socks or brightly coloured accessories at Mountain Equipment Co-op, old army shirts from camping stores... hell, even museum gift shops were fair game.

When I was in New York a little while ago, doing the museum thing, I was reminded of my little covert shopping outings. The MET online store has a lot of interesting jewellery, including the Egyptian style bangles pictured above.

Here is Santos in her F1 McLaren outfit I made her. Since I am a bit of a procrastinator when it comes to my own projects, it took about 18 months to complete! So technically it is the 2010 design (as seen below on Jenson and Lewis). I was going to make it sleeved, but that seemed like a bit much, and too complicated. I was also thinking about making her a little helmet out of papier-mâché but I never got around to it. Maybe next year... although J thinks I should make her a horse armour costume since I am obsessed with armour. I think that would be fun, but tedious... but maybe tedious in a fun way.

It looks like F1 is adding a race in New Jersey after Montreal, which is very very exciting! The course (street course! even more exciting!) is just across the water from Manhattan. Like literally across the water. Which means a Montreal/NYC bundle trip might be in store for 2013!!!!!..... Sorry for the geek-out.

So...do you force your pet to wear a costume on Halloween?

I made a few purchases in NYC, but nothing all that exciting! Just some of those items that aren't exciting to purchase but are highly useful.

I finally broke down and got a linen Isabel Marant tee. I've wanted one for a long time, but couldn't justify the price. I searched and searched for something similar, but couldn't find anything that fit the bill. So I gave in a bought one at the store in Soho.

At Uniqlo I finally bought some round-neck cashmere sweaters, in black and light grey. I know I will get a lot of use out of them. I also got an oversize blue button-up shirt that I was on the fence about but have already worn a lot since.

Shown at the very bottom of the pile- I braved Topshop on a Saturday to get a pair of Baxter grey jeans, and I love them!

At Otte in Greenwich Village (I love Greenwich Village! I would want to live there if I ever live in NYC) I got these teeny tiny skull earrings in rose gold. They also come in silver or gold.

At Diptyque I made J buy me a candle because he (albeit accidentally) smashed one of mine. I went with Feu de Bois, which I have always wanted and is the perfect smokey woody smell for fall and Halloween.

Also, I painted the tables like Anna's Faux-Aalto table makeover. I like the update!

Tourist in your own town

It was my boyfriend's birthday last weekend, so in addition to brunch and dinner, I took him on an eco-tour around Horseshoe Bay. I am not a boat person. I get sea-sick so easily, so I made sure to take some Gravol before the trip, and luckily it worked really well. So well, that I was drowsy for the rest of the day! Being drowsy is better than being sea sick though. Horseshoe Bay is a 20 min drive from the downtown core, where you can hop on a boat or ferry to explore some of the surrounding islands.

Dries or H&M?

I salvaged a great find from H&M the other week- this gold hair cover with attached elastic, just like Dries but only about $6 or $8 I think! I've gotten so many compliments on it and people asking where I found it. There was also a gold collar and bracelet with a little sliding lock that I picked up too for $6 and $12.

I was in Las Vegas for work recently and I stopped by Barney's. I was originally going to pick up another Byredo scent (Accord Oud, which I am in love with), but the Frederic Malle scents intrigued me as well. On a whim I decided to go with a Malle scent instead, and chose L'eau d'hiver.

I tend to think of my perfumes in seasons- with Byredo for example, I see lighter, fruitier scents like Pulp as a summer perfume and woodsy scents like Accord Oud as a fall/winter perfume and wear them accordingly. I don't know if this is correct or if anyone else does this, but it is what suits my nose. ok, ok... I give in to Alexander Wang... I love all these shoes, and the looks below. The outerwear is amazing, especially paired with leather trousers. I'm even into those blue trousers- though they are glittery, instead of tonal animal print like I thought! I don't know if I could wear glittery bottoms, though. The whole look evokes a futuristic spangly-pantalooned Amelia Earhart.

I have been without a hair brush for about 7 months. I had an Aveda wood paddle brush with plastic bristles that was battered and bent out of shape. It lasted me a long time (about 6 years!), but it was time to replace it. I got rid of it before my Paris trip, thinking I would find the perfect one in a pharmacy over there. Well, it never happened. I did pick up a Mason Pearson comb, but I couldn't justify the price of one of their hair brushes, as it wasn't exactly what I was looking for. Their brushes seem more like smoothers, and I needed something tough to handle a blowdryer.

My requirements:

- round, so that I can smooth and straighten with a blowdryer
- somewhat aesthetically pleasing. No chunky plastic handle- wood or at least nicely shaped plastic
- a barrel that can handle heat from a blowdryer
- a mixture of bristles: plastic to grip and get through the hair and boar or equivalent to smooth

I was recently in Salt Lake City and noticed that there was a Sally Beauty Supply in the strip mall by my hotel. I had always heard about this place but never been to one. It was there that I found the perfect hair brush, and for $7. I picked it up thinking it was probably at least over $20 or $30.

It is made by Beautique and features a wood handle, ceramic barrel and a mix of boar and plastic bristles- all my requirements have been met. It is the most amazing brush I've ever used and the best $7 I've ever spent. If you can't tell, I'm thoroughly impressed.

It's dramatically cut down the amount of time I spend messing about with my hair, and I think it's even cut down on the time it takes to dry my hair. Unfortunately I don't have the kind of hair that air dries well on its own- It would turn into a frizzy mess.

Upon further research, there is actually a Sally's Beauty Supply if you feel like venturing out to Surrey/Delta (C165-12477 88 Ave, Surrey, BC). I might have to visit soon and check it out. I can't see this exact brush model on their website, but you might be able to find it in store if you're interested in trying it out.

I saw the film "Hanna" the other day, which stars Saoirse Ronan, Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett. It's no wonder I was into it- I have a thing for movies or tv shows centered around kick-ass girls. Hanna has a bit of a Bourne-ishness to it, though I wish the storyline was developed a bit more. I still enjoyed it overall. I wouldn't even mind if they stretched it out to a few movies a la Bourne- the end left me wanting to see Hanna kick some more ass! I think it's worth checking out if it's playing near you.

I'm kind of a nail polish addict (from a young age!), so when I saw these new colours from Chanel, particularly Graphite, I knew I had to add them to my collection. I was too impatient to wait until they got released here, so I ordered them from Saks. They are pretty unique colours when you see them on the nail. Graphite and Peridot are my favourite, but even Quartz is a bit different from other polishes of the same shade- it has very very fine duo-chrome glitter/shimmer.

I also ordered the Prelude palette- a quad of neutrals with a very very fine and subtle shimmer. Neutrals are pretty much all I wear unless I feel particularly motivated and inspired to wear something a bit bolder. I have another Chanel neutral quad (Quatuor Boutons De Chanel) that runs warmer, while Prelude runs more cool/neutral. These neutral quads are perfect for traveling- everything you need in a glossy black compact little cube.

Sorry I'm posting a lot of Demeulemeester-centric things. I can't help it!

Today I had forgotten where I stashed my beetle pin, and when I found it I also found the box for my feather necklace and a little envelope with this miniature book inside, a token from the Tokyo Ann Demeulemeester store when I bought a tunic shirt.

I loved the service I received at the Tokyo store. They were more than happy to dress me up and show me how each garment was runway-styled. That is a helpful thing, especially when you are faced with a long strip of fabric with holes and straps all over the place and don't quite know what to do with it. You kind of receive a "Marie Antoinette" moment- you just have to stand there with your arms slightly outstretched while they tie and gather and fold the garments on your body. I can't wait to go back!

Globe-Trotter & Smythson: Travelling in Style

I am well due for a new piece of luggage. My trusty roller bag has a broken wheel (it still rolls, but I have to kick it back in every once and a while!), and pieces keep falling off of it with every trip I go on. I would love to own a piece of Globe-Trotter luggage- a nice carry-on sized trolley bag from their "Centenary" collection.

Of course, the whole range of luggage is beautiful, from the larger suitcases right down to the vanity case, shown above with limited Erdem patterned lining. Though, if I ever purchase one of these pieces of luggage, I will just have to live in my own little world. I will have to pretend that I am not sitting squished into economy class, but instead writing letters on personalized stationary with a Mont Blanc pen and rose-scented burgundy ink in 1st class, like Dita Von Teese. I will also have to block out of my memory the stampede-like line-up to board the plane and the fight for over-head baggage space. I will need to be blissfully unaware of the person inches behind me kicking my seat and clinging to it when they get up to shuffle to the toilet.

I'm also a fan of Smythson for travel-related pouches and cases. How luxurious to have a monogrammed leather passport cover or a special "something" to store a little bit of makeup in, rather than a ziplock bag which I sometimes find myself using when I'm in a pinch.

One of the great exhibits I went to in Paris was a Louis Vuitton Luggage exhibition. It was really fascinating to see the early trunks, luggage and custom made pieces and how much care and workmanship went into each. It's too bad traveling isn't a luxury for most people anymore- except for Dita Von Teese... or Karl Lagerfeld for that matter. Check out all that Goyard luggage...

seasonless list- update

Now that some time has past I thought I'd share how I'm doing with my "seasonless list".

1. Balenciaga leather jacket.
Status: unchanged

I'm hoping to buy one second-hand or the next time I go to Paris, but I will have to start a savings fund for it! I am still daydreaming about the feeling of sliding one over my shoulders.

2. K. Jacques sandals.
Status: unchanged

I wanted to buy these before leaving Paris in April, but they were out of stock and I would have had to order them 2 weeks prior to get them in time. For the time being I have two pairs of flat sandals I can rely on (old K. Jacques which have seen better days, and a pair of Ann Demeulemeester flat sandals) and I will wait until next summer to pick these up.

3. Long wool coat (Ann Demeulemeester?)
Status: purchased

I recently ordered this from Yoox with a coupon, though it was still really expensive! I figured I could use the summer to pay it down. It just arrived today and I was a bit concerned that it was too big (even for a 38!) but with a sweater on I think it's just right. I have to remember that one problem I have with most of my fall/winter coats is that the body or sleeves are often so fitted that it becomes difficult to wear a sweater underneath. I really needed something like a traditional "overcoat" with sleeves wide enough to accommodate a chunky sweater and shoulders and body roomy enough for whatever layers lay beneath. It has a belt for cinching and the buttons alongside the left of the coat allow the collar to be buttoned all the way up to cover half my face, which is good when it is cold and windy!

4. Off-shoulder Ann Demeulemeester tunic
Status: purchased

I ended up buying the black printed version of this top at the Ann Demeulemeester store in Antwerp. I've worn it with skinny jeans as a top and also with a leather skirt peeking out below as more of a mini-dress on warmer days. The only draw-back is that because of the way the neck is, I always forget which hole to put my head through!

5. Rick Owens leggings/jeggings
Status: purchased

I ended up finding a second-hand pair on ebay for a FRACTION (a very small fraction) of the retail price. They need a little repair (the topstitching is pulled in a few spots) but otherwise are in great condition. The only other thing I need to do is hem them a bit- they are super long!

6. where's number six? Let's say the Norma Kamali sunglasses

As mentioned before, I bought these second-hand in Antwerp and I love wearing them!

7. Simple everyday necklace

I've put this on hold for now. It seems like all the beautiful, understated, simple jewelry is always so expensive! I do really love this Saskia Diez necklace though.

I still love these LD Tuttle otk boots, but I'm also obsessed with the Damir Doma otk boots from Fall 2011. I don't think these will be a priority for me this fall, though. Both are expensive and not really a necessity.

9. Bright clutch
Status: unchanged

I actually bought a bright clutch, but it was more of a last-minute solution to complete a wedding outfit for my friend's ceremony and reception. I just grabbed a cheap zip clutch from Zara for $25. It's hot pink and I'm not too sure how much use I'm going to get out of it in the future, as hot pink isn't really a colour I gravitate towards.

10. Ankle boots
Status: updated target

I am still after a good pair of ankle boots but I'm thinking to replace the Balenciaga/ Alexander Wang beatle-style boots with Guidi's ankle-height back zip boots or ma+ back-lace boots. I think something a bit more rugged will be more versatile in my wardrobe. While I think these are probably one of the more worthy purchases for fall, my new options are quite expensive, and will require some saving.

New Additions:

- leather leggings. While my H&M find last fall was much more wallet-friendly, I'm still craving a long, skinny, elastic-waisted leather legging. The big problem, as anyone who has ever searched for the same thing, is that the perfect leather leggings always cost an arm and a leg! Eventually I will have to save up for a pair, because I find them indisposable on their own as well as layered under dresses and skirts during the fall and winter. Plus, an elastic waist? So comfy. The zipper and tab closure on my H&M version strangle my midsection.

I've also purchased some things that aren't on this list, but that my wardrobe really needed, such as a lightweight cardigan, a summer-weight dress, and a spring/summer jacket. Sometimes I find it difficult to buy the "boring" things that my wardrobe really needs (like the spring/summer jacket or a roomy fall/winter coat), when I really want to buy something more exciting. Nevertheless, I know it will really pay off in the end, because inevitably those are the garments that get used the most!

Now that I've purchased the last few items for spring/summer and even have a head-start on fall, I'm putting myself on a shopping ban for at least a month and a half- 2 months if I can make it- until September when I can start to think about adding a few fall items to my wardrobe.

I took this picture last week, when it finally stopped raining for 2 seconds. Head to toe in Ann D. I've decided that I would be completely fine with only wearing Ann D for the rest of my life. This top is my new favourite top- I ordered it from Eva Gentry while I was in Paris, and I was so excited for it upon my return home. It is a lightweight woven fabric with a drawstring waist and spiral buttoned sleeves. It is a bit big for me, but I like the looseness.

I've fallen for Byredo scents. Not only is the packaging beautiful, but the product is amazing. I bought Pulp perfume (bergamot, cardamom, blackcurrant, fig, red apple, tiare, cedar wood, praline, peach flower) for spring and summer. I also picked up a candle in Cassis (cinnamon, clove buds, blackcurrant, lingonberry, strawberry, cedarwood, black amber) and I already have a scent lined up for fall: Accord Oud (blackberry (yum!), saffron, rum, leather accord, clary sage, patchouli, powdery musks). I have it on right now and I can't stop smelling my wrist. Highly recommended!

I love poking around Merci's selection of clothing, home goods and stationary. For many the store is a must-see when visiting Paris. I was eager to stop by and check out their new exhibit called "White Space". After doing so I have completely fallen in love with their linen bedding and waffle-knit towels. I'm seriously obsessed.

The bedding section was buzzing with people so I couldn't get a picture of the inviting bed set-up they had, but it looked pretty dreamy: layers of lightweight crinkled linen sheets and pillows. In other words: spring/summer bed heaven. Just throw in a Pia Wallen cross-blanket when it gets chilly and I am set.

I have so many pictures to post from different day trips and museums I've been visiting, but I had to post about my new sunglasses from Norma Kamali, because they are awesome!

I found these in Antwerp at Labels Inc., a fantastic designer second-hand store. Such a fluke that I found the exact sunglasses I wanted at a second-hand store for half retail price.

Pay no mind to my hair- I am trying to cope with what I did to it by pulling it back into a messy bun every day. I just don't know what else to do. Why oh why did I get a fringe and layers! Oh well, it will grow back out eventually, I suppose. I should have just left it alone though. Grrr...

In Bruges

We took a little day trip to Brugge, and Santos came along too! It was her first time riding a proper train, and she sat on the seat, wedged between J and I. We were lucky it was a really beautiful day, perfect for exploring. I definitely recommend visiting if you are going to be traveling through Belgium or are in Paris or anywhere close by.

Le marché aux Puces: Clignacourt

A few weeks ago J was taking a class at Le Cordon Bleu, so I went to the flea market. I love poking around the stalls. Truth be told, I was really going to find a certain seller who last year had the most amazing taxidermy piece. Even though I find taxidermy animals fascinating in museums, I still am a bit weirded out by them and don't have any in my home. But this one display that this seller had was hilarious and was so me, if taxidermy animals could ever speak to your sense of humor. The masterpiece in question was a wooden platform with two squirrels engaged in a sword fight. Yes. It was truly amazing and so weird. I was hoping that it was still there, but when I found the seller it was nowhere in sight.

There are many sellers who specialize in vintage/antique industrial furniture.

This display was interesting and sad. Each buffalo horn had a date, one for every year starting in the 1980s or something. I guess every year this person would go and kill a buffalo and mount its horns on their wall. Weird and pointless.

This is an amazing vintage store with priceless pieces from Chanel, Dior, Hermes and many other high end brands. It's that kind of store where you don't want to touch anything.

I arrived around lunch when all the sellers get together and have wine and fantastic-smelling lunches.

There is a lot of taxidermy, including one creepy little den (not pictured above) that had every kind of exotic animal staring back at you on all four walls. Need a giraffe head or a full-size zebra for some reason? They have it. I kind of expected to see the hunter of all these animals leaning against the wall in the corner, taxidermied himself. I think it's only fitting.

I did manage to pick up this vintage science poster from the 1940s. It's a diagram of a mole I think. I even haggled in French, which I was quite proud about, since I don't even like to haggle in English. I managed to get 40% off the asking price, which isn't too bad!

Damir Doma's show really resonated with me this season. I think it was the footwear. Those over-the-knee boots need to get in my life next fall. The chunkiness of the footwear reminds me of Ann Demeulemeester, in a really good way. Like, that they will be comfortable and look awesome at the same time, which is really important to me.

I also am really drawn to the long loincloth-like skirt panels- they have an ancient Egyptian look to them, in a way, and I love love love ancient Egyptian art & culture (I wanted to be an Egyptologist when I was younger). I like these strange loincloth skirts used with familiar things, like a Mongolian fur coat, a simple zipped jacket or sweater.

I love the armbands too, even over a jacket!

Get a pair and wear them on the arms or the wrists- I like the symmetry.

Although I could never picture myself wearing something like this, I love the rusty colour and the weird abstracted animal print paired with brown boots.

Gah! These are #1 on my must-have list for next fall. I am saving my pennies now!

I love a good beauty feature that delves into the medicine cabinet and bathroom shelves of well-kept women. But I think one (ie. me) has to realize that some people are just born with perfect skin and perfect hair, and the products they use won't necessarily work miracles on you- as much as you want them to. Isn't it so irritating when the person featured says "oh it's just good genes" or "I don't even wash my face everyday" or "I get my hair professionally blow dried every day" or even "I get facials and manicures every week"?? Damn you. A long time ago I said I was going to take better care of myself and get a facial and manicure every month (I swear I have over active cuticles). Do you want to guess how long that lasted? 1 month. I got 1 facial and no manicure. I think I'm going to give another go at getting regular facials and manicures- starting NOW.

london: yohji yamamoto exhibit

The other week J & I went to London to check out the Yohji Yamamoto exhibit at the V&A. The Victoria & Albert museum is one of my favourites, so I was looking forward to what they were putting together. I had been watching all the videos that were posted on their blog, which got me really excited to see it.

We took the train to London and headed straight to the museum to see the exhibit. Unfortunately no pictures were allowed in the main exhibition area, but you can see pictures of it all over the internets, including on Style Bubble.

The exhibit was a multi-media experience, with garments, films, catalogues, and books on show. There were also pieces of clothing placed throughout the museum- like a hide-and-seek of sorts, especially because we kept getting lost and couldn't find them all!

Honestly, I was expecting a larger exhibit. I feel the videos of the research the curators did and the interviews with Yohji on the V&A blog are far more insightful than the exhibit itself. Sure, it is always fascinating to see great designer works in person, but overall it just didn't meet my expectations. If you can't make it to London to see the exhibit in person, I highly recommend checking out the V&A curator blog- there are some excellent pictures showing the process of putting the exhibit and the accompanying book together.

After the exhibit, we had lunch at a random pub and started hitting a few shops before we had to go back to Paris. My favourite store of the ones we checked out was Layers. I was really impressed by their selection of Guidi boots for women. It's not often you see that many of them in one place- it really makes me crave a new pair (short black back-zip please!) I also fell in love with this Damir Doma belt.

catacombs

I had never been to the Paris catacombs, so J and I went a little while ago on a weekday when it wasn't busy. It had rained the day/night before so it was very wet down there, which made it extra creepy. It's really awe inspiring. With each skull I like to think about who that person was, what they did and how they lived. I love history, and living in a city with such a rich and fascinating past gives me endless things to daydream about: The church I pass on the way to school, the building I live in, the cobblestone streets....

It's outfits like this that remind me of the things in my wardrobe that are missing. An olive scarf and an olive bag with purple-toned boots? Sheesh. It reminds me that I need a black scarf, and later on a new black bag. Sometimes you just have to throw shit on to get out the door, and this is one of those outfits. To be honest I've been wearing a variation of the same thing for almost 2 months. It's only recently warmed up and I've started wearing different things (ie. not jeans 24/7)

It kills me that I was actually in Paris for fashion week and I didn't get to see my favourite designers' shows. Oh well, c'est la vie. I can still watch the videos and see the pictures and still be in awe.

The colour palette was the first thing that really drew me into this collection. Such a subtle mix of navy, different shades of grey, black, and even shades of brown and taupe. It's the combination of a good handful of these in the same outfit, along with the gradating layers (right down to the accordion-front boots) that is most appealing. The mixed-material jackets are stand-outs for me, with stiff, curved leather shoulders.

One of the best results that could come from seeing the above, is that the layering and colour combinations can all be achieved with items one already owns- even if all you own is black (see black layered look). I love finding new ways to think about or to combine the clothes I already own.

I also really enjoyed the bright red lipstick, a surprising departure from the history of bare or eye-focused Rick Owens runway faces. I really love the YSL one I recently got, just for the record. Plus, go bleached eyebrows!

I absolutely love Ann Demeulemeester. Watching the show on video even got an emotional reaction out of me. The styling is over the top, which I think is exciting for a show, and I quite enjoyed it. At the same time I am still able to pick out individual pieces that would easily integrate into my own wardrobe- my dream wardrobe!

This is my favourite outfit of the show, in terms of wearability for myself.

These new boots may be similar to the famed triple-lace (and single laced versions) boots of Fall 2008, which I will never get my hands on since they are selling for full retail plus more on ebay. These might be their replacement, though I'll have to wait to see all angles. The extra long leather leggings are also to die for- I neeeed a pair stat!

I started feeling sick on Monday, but I am trying to fight through it because I don't want to miss any French classes. Yesterday on the way to the Tuileries (aka the dog park) we stopped at Sotheby's to see the hommage to Serge Gainsbourg, "Gainsbourg, Initiales L.G", an exhibition of portraits shot by various famous photographers.

Today I attended the Fall 2011 runway show of Limi Feu. I was lucky enough to actually get a seat, where I scoped the place out to see who was in attendance. From where I was sitting I could see Hilary Alexander, Tim Blanks, and a few other people whom you know you recognize, but can't place. Much of the audience was formed from people draped in black, including myself save for a pop of orange lipstick!

As soon as the runway lights went on and house lights dimmed, bagpipe music started to echo throughout the building and models immediately surfaced. Unexpectedly, small scale feminine florals premiered first, but done with a Limi edge, mixed with draped over-layers. The models' hair was electrocuted and wrapped around the tops of their head, with bare paled faces.

My personal favourites included the handful of black asymmetric silk dresses with cut-outs, and the long, stark white shirts paired with an oversized black waistcoat, bare legs and black leather boots. I was laughing inside because I was very close to wearing something similar with my tunic-length white Ann Demeulemeester shirt and black Number Nine vest over top (minus the bare legs! It's a bit too cold for that!)

I was a bit of an idiot and forgot my camera, so I just had my iphone camera. Still images were impossible with the lighting, but I managed to take some video clips and assemble them into this video. Hope you enjoy it!

Wish me luck trying to get into other shows! I tried Gareth Pugh earlier tonight, and in the words of Cher Horowitz, "I was brutally rebuffed". I'm really hoping the fashion gods will be on my side tomorrow because it's Ann Demeulemeester and Rick Owens and I think I might die if I can't get in.

I made a seasonless list of 10 items for this year, just as a guideline. It reminds me what I actually need. Well, need is a strong word, let's say "want the most" or "could use the most"

In no particular order...

1. Balenciaga leather jacket. I doubt that this will happen this year, because the best place to buy one is in Paris. You may think "um- stupid, you are in Paris right now" but I know I won't be able to raise enough funds by the time I go home to Canada. But, it's on the list anyway, just in case I win the lottery or my bank accidentally adds a "0" to my account.

2. K. Jaques sandals. I'm going to pick up a pair before I leave Paris. I haven't decided which model, but they will be black leather.

3. Black mid-length wool coat. My peacoat I bought 5-6 years ago from Filippa K is being retired, but not for being out of style (because it's not) but for being short. I need a longer ass-covering coat for warmth. I really wanted the 'zip-in-half' coat that COS had this fall, but unfortunately I missed it.

4. Something Ann Demeulemeester. No matter what, there's always something I will want. I'm thinking it might be a top of some kind.

5. Rick Owens or Helmut Lang skinny jeans/jean-leggings aka "jeggings" (shudder) I hate the term- when I think of jeggings I think of spandex leggings with jean texture screen-printed on them, which is hideous. But yes, I want something with an elastic waist (my god I can't believe I'm actually typing elastic waist) tight and stretchy for when I'm too lazy for buttons.

6. An insulated parka. I think I may have found one that is insulated & warm yet fits in with my aesthetic without breaking the bank (via ebay)

7. An "everyday" necklace. Not sure what this will be yet- maybe something like a simple chain.

8. Over-the-knee boots. The LD Tuttle boots have evaded me for yet another season. I hope they make them again next fall, or I can find a pair (on sale maybe?!) somewhere.

9. Something red- either a dress or top, or maybe just a bag. I've been liking Comme des Garcon's zip clutch for some time- it's identical to the Celine one.

10. I really want a pair of chelsea boots, like the Alexander Wang Anouck or the Balenciaga ones.

Other less important things I've been thinking about is a new pair of sunglasses (tortoise shell) and these crazy leopard sandals from Kooples. I keep walking past Kooples stores with them in the window, staring back at me.

This past Sunday we went to Richard Lenoir Market by Place de la Bastille. It was really crowded, but so many fantastic fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, flowers, grains, fish, breads and prepared food. More often than not, each are artfully displayed in front of line-ups of people, clamoring to get the best pick.

After fighting the crowds we got out alive with a rotisserie chicken, a baguette, a small container of tartaflette, shallots, and on the way home some sweets from Jaques Genin. J is obsessed with trying all the best-rated tarte au citron, so we've been having a lot of sweets lately! Not complaining. I could do with a daily trip to Pierre Hermé!

I had my first day of French classes today. Boy do I feel dumb! It's frustrating not being able to remember all the French I took in high-school. I also figured out that I'm probably better at writing in French than speaking... I go mute if I can't express something in the exact words I want to use, instead of just fumbling around with the worlds I do know. I also made an idiot out of myself in response to "who is your favourite actress?" question in class. I really don't have a favourite actress so the only person I could think of was Gwyneth Paltrow (?!?!). I am officially the fool on the hill and utterly embarrassed...

...but all is well because though I came home defeated, there was an orchid, a box of macarons and a little bag of gourmet chocolate from J.

my so called life

I never watched My So Called Life in '94/5 when it aired. I'm not even sure if it aired in Canada or not (it must have), but when I was younger my parents wouldn't let us watch anything like that. So for some reason lately I've been watching a lot of older tv shows from beginning to end. I'm just about finished with My So Called Life. It's an obsession. Once I start a series I can't stop watching it.

I don't really have anything constructive to say about the series except that I really wish I watched it in 1994/5 because I would have really identified with Angela. Not to mention, it's fun to remember all my hideous plaid shirts and floral dresses, mom jeans and seventeen magazines with Jared Leto and Claire Danes on the cover. It's strange- it feels like I'm looking back at a different person. But, seeing her hair makes me REALLY want to be a red-head again! Might have to make it happen in Paris after all.

Somehow I managed to drag J to the flea market at porte de vanves. He hates "old stuff" but on many occasions has accompanied me to flea markets, antique stores and vintage boutiques, for which I am grateful. I could practically feel his skin crawling, though he was a few steps behind me! Poor boyfriend. I really just wanted to check out what this flea was about. I have a habit of sleeping in, so we arrived as some of the vendors were packing up shop, but there were still many who were open.

This vintage "horloge spirituelle" print was the only item I was mildly considering (besides that boulder-sized geode a few pictures up!)

I've been incredibly busy the past week! Here is a lazy post of some pictures taken on my phone (sorry for the quality in some)

This is all I've purchased so far:

Just nail polish! And a red lipstick from YSL. The colour is 17 in the rouge volupte range.

I also got this leather notebook by midori from Merci to chronicle my adventure. I have a horrible horrible memory, so this is just for day to day "what did I do?" business.

The leather has a really beautiful finish, the kind that you know will look fantastic when it's scratched and beat-up a bit.

I met up with Anastacia of the blog Fashion Pariah (now closed) and we did a bit of shopping and had lunch.

The other day at Palais Royale. SUCH a perfect weather day!

Sweating it out at Rick Owens on such a beautiful day, dressed in leather leggings, Yohji sweater dress and Zara mongolian fur vest. I have a little test I do to see what the weather is- I put my hand out the window and wave it up and down... it seemed cool that day (I guess in the shade of our street) but I was cooking by the end of the day! Especially after hoofing it across the Marais in my Ann Demeulemeester heeled boots.

I'm going to try to take my proper camera out with me more, to get some nicer shots! I hate feeling like a tourist though, even if I know I am.

Sorry I've been absent, but I've been busy packing up, traveling and settling into our new apartment in Paris. It feels really surreal typing that.

It's been so chilly here the past few days, so I'm really glad I brought my bulky but warm fur coat. I love that I don't have to think twice about throwing it on. I don't have to worry about people giving me dirty looks like they would back home in the land of fleece and gore-tex. I wore it with monkey fur (hair?) trimmed leather gloves that I bought last year at Le Bon Marche, too!

We took Santos to the Tuileries to check out areas for her to run around off-leash. We let her sprint up and down between the hedges, which she seemed to enjoy. She even met a French greyhound who ran around with her! I love that she is allowed in stores and restaurants. It's especially nice when it's cold out. She's wearing two sweaters and a neck-warmer in this picture. She trotted around Printemps and even got comfortable, lying down in the Celine section while I petted the Spring 2011 collection. I think she may like it here :)

I thought I would post some of the makeup looks I've been liking for spring.

Usually I wear a pretty natural look, or natural plus liquid eyeliner (I LOVE liquid eyeliner). My lips are always dry, and also I'm too lazy to re-apply anything throughout the day, so most of the time I just go bare-lipped.

Examples of my usual look (yeah right, I wish I looked this good!):

Lastly, if you're like me, and put your hair up a lot, I have to share something with you! I bought this weird spring-like thing from Goody, and you use it for buns. Basically you twist your hair around and screw in two of these things at opposite ends. They screw in like a corkscrew, holds everything in place and can't be seen!

I took a few photos of other outfits that have been in my rotation, between more interesting looks. I call these my "I'm tired, running late for work, I really don't care what I wear" outfits. They are simple, consisting of two garments (maybe a t-shirt layered under the sweater for warmth, if I am not running totally late) boots, and out the door.

Also, I appreciate everyone's comments about my red hair! But, as of a few days ago, it isn't red anymore! I changed it again, back to brown for the three month trip. Red hair fades fast, and I hate having roots! I don't want to have to deal with getting my hair done in Paris for monetary reasons, and the stresses of "what if it gets jacked up?!" I may go back to red after I get back, who knows!

Anyway...again, sorry for the darkness, but these were taken before I found my new photo spot outdoors.

This is the new Vince sweater I was talking about in my post about colour. I got it for Christmas. It's waffle-knit, which is a texture I love.

This is my first and only Alexander Wang thing in my wardrobe. I got this in November- it's the perfect skirt that isn't trying hard to be anything, but still looks interesting enough.

This is the Club Monaco sweater I was talking about in my olive post. It has slits at the side, all the way up to the height of the ribbing. I wish the round neck opening was a bit bigger, but all in all it's the perfect "just throw it on" cashmere sweater.

Also this is the Isabel Marant skirt I got in Paris this September! I've been so bad not sharing much of what I got there. I loved this skirt online, but when I saw it in person I was blown away. The texture of the fabric sucked me in, not to mention the buttery soft leather trim. I was a goner- I had to have it.

Lately I am finding myself "shopping in my closet" more, and finding different ways to wear things- combining things I wouldn't usually think to combine. Usually it is in the midst of a rush around the house, trying to get ready for work. I think I need that kind of pressure to be creative sometimes! I think the switch from not working at home has made me try to be more creative with the way I dress, because when I work from home it's very tempting to (as in, I do) wear the same thing every day because nobody sees you!

I know, the title is lame, but it's also true. I'm starting off 2011 (well, the second month of 2011) with a big push in the right direction. At the end of January, J, Santos the whippet, and I will be heading to Paris for 3 months. I will be enrolling in a French course to whip myself into shape!

I'm pretty sure I will be going with La Sorbonne- either the intensive or the spoken expression short-courses. If ANYONE has taken either of these courses, or has any advice for short-session French courses in Paris, please let me know! Olive with black or grey is my favourite colour combination right now.

I've bought a few things this fall in olive: a cashmere Club Monaco scarf, a cashmere Club Monaco sweater, a sheer long button-up shirt from H&M, and let's not forget about my beloved Balenciaga bag.

I'm slowly working on integrating more colour into my wardrobe, and I'm quite pleased about it. Often bright colours make me feel uncomfortable, like my outfit is yelling "Hey!! Look at me!!! I'm so brighttttt!!!!" But my new colours are subdued and don't make me feel out of place or self-conscious. First I started with the olive, because it really complimented my red hair. I also got a navy cashmere Club Monaco scarf (the same style as the olive one), a brown waffle-knit sweater from Vince, and my camel coat from Zara.

Of course the colour that is buzzing around is red, and I am dying to add something red to my wardrobe (besides my tights and red Repetto flats) Just one item, like a silk blouse, a dress, or even red jeans (though they scare me!) I was skeptical when Ann Demeulemeester showed red on the runway with her signature black, but now I can't get enough, and need some red in my life! Red lipstick is also on my list- I haven't worn it in many years. My old favourite was MAC's Ruby Woo, but now I need something more moisturizing- I'm dying to try out Tom Ford's new lipstick.

I finally found the perfect spot for some outfit photos- on my balcony in actual daylight. Weather permitting. The building has a concrete finish that acts as a nice neutral backdrop. It was really windy and cold this day, perfect for my new (to me) fur coat. I love how fluffy it is- it makes me feel like a teddy bear. And, I love that it's brown! For a vintage coat it is in excellent condition, especially the lining, which often gets discoloured and ratty in vintage furs.

Well, I've been clinging onto this lamp for a while, but there is nowhere for it to go, and despite my enthusiastic presentations, J is unconvinced of its beauty. So I offer it up to you kind readers...

I bought it at an antique/vintage store, and I assume it is a reproduction, since there are no markings anywhere on the lamp, but I really don't know since I've never handled the real deal. It is in great condition for its presumed age. There are only a few very minor marks, and one pin-sized dimple, as you can see above.

I thought I would share my new (to me) boots, since they were next to impossible to see in my last photos (though I'm surprised some of you did notice!) The sun is showing itself right now- the perfect opportunity to take some shots.

I will never pass up a great pair of ankle boots, especially from Ann Demeulemeester. Her shoes are so comfortable, that I would rather pay $150 for a beat-up pair of Ann D's than a brand new pair of something else similarly priced. They aren't in too bad shape- they just need a trip to my cobbler for new soles (the old ones are peeling a bit) and a buff&shine.

Sorry for the darkness of these photos. It's been dark here in general, and the fact that I always decide to take pictures at night doesn't help much.

Back in September, my last day in Stockholm included a 15-minute mad dash around Topshop, mostly in search of this sweater. It's become one of my favourite things to wear this fall and winter- something I just throw on if I'm in a rush for work or can't decide what to wear.

Instead of just with black jeans, I've worn it here with black leather pants (from H&M- another great buy this fall! Real leather with a bit of stretch for $200) and an Undercover lace dress that is at the exact perfect length. I've had this Undercover dress for years, and can count on one hand how many times I've worn it. I was almost going to get rid of it when suddenly it became the perfect layering piece. I especially like the way it looks over leather.

Also, I find it funny how my hair has a gradient or balayage look here. It's just really long roots! I really need to visit a salon.

4. Kiehl's Lip Balm #1 in Cranberry. This was a gift with purchase and is so good! Better than the actual product I went in for.

5. phone. Finally got a new phone after mine was jacked in Brussels.

6. ipod... yes...I haven't put all my music on my phone yet.

7. wallet

8. keys and furry keychain. I made this keychain so it's easier to find my keys in my bag. I just reach in and feel for something furry.

9. Givenchy lipstick in Rose Desire, a pale pink

10. Suica penguin cloth. One thing I learned in Japan is why people carry these around. It comes in handy, and has saved me many a times from sweat face/ spilling things on myself. This one features the Suica penguin, the mascot of Tokyo's JR rail system.

11. Chanel lip gloss in 56 Imaginaire. I got this for Christmas, and it was greatly needed. It is one of my only coloured lip glosses.

12. A container of something (not sure what) I got in Paris at a supermarket. I liked the container but I haven't had the guts to taste what it is. It's something licorice and I hate licorice. Maybe I can empty it out and use it for mints or something.

13. Headphones for work.

On this trip, by the time we got to Stockholm, I was out of shopping steam (not to mention out of money!) So I didn't buy any clothing except a sweater from Topshop, but we had to check out all the Swedish standards, like Acne, Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair, Filippa K, Whyred, etc.

This is a collection of the things I picked up in Stockholm (minus sweater) I could barely contain myself at the Iris Hantverk store- I really have a thing for their brushes. Any of the large department stores are also a great place to look for classic Swedish designs.

We, well... I picked the Bath room, because, hello! Bathtub! I don't have a bathtub at home, so I take every opportunity to use one. The bathroom was outfitted with Face Stockholm products.

I really love the sink- I wish I took a close-up picture, but we just got in, directly from a flight from Paris, and were tired + hungry.

We really enjoyed our stay: spacious rooms, great bathrooms, comfy bed, convenient location, free breakfast and unique decor. Can't wait to go back to Stockholm!

I had to re-post this on here, so I can go back to it easily. I am always intrigued to know specific products people use, especially beautiful and chic French women. I'm lazy in just re-posting it, but please please visit Into The Gloss for links to any products and more interviews like this.

“You know what I like, and more and more I think it’s important, is to be toned. I try to do the gym every day; it’s good to do something for yourself every day if you can. I have a trainer in New York and in Paris. I do the weights, and also I just bought a stationary bike. For me, it’s the most important thing. When you look soft, that I don’t like at all. Gisele is of course the best body, for me, because she’s doing a lot of different sports. I stopped smoking ten years ago and I don’t drink anymore. I sleep a lot and I eat very healthy. Most of the time I have Japanese food—sushi, sashimi. I love Japan—I love Japanese people, I love the culture, I love the food. They are the most amazing people for beauty, in Japan. They live the longest; they care for themselves so well. The people don’t age! I’m very French because both parents are French and my culture is French but I think because I’m traveling so much I’ve become much more international than a normal French girl. So I feel less and less French in a way, when I talk to my French girlfriends. My girlfriends still go to Le Voltaire in Paris, a very French restaurant, very heavy foods, and sometime I love to do that, but mostly I prefer to eat Japanese. It’s funny because in Paris you still have very traditional restaurants but I don’t eat there much anymore.

Hair is very important I think, no? I always like to brush my hair. I wash it every day. You have to spend a lot of time for everything; I color it, get treatments. I think when I was a kid I was not happy with my hair. It was very thin and very straight and I wanted to have curly hair. I was doing everything—when Linda Evangelista cut her hair, so did I. And I got a perm. That was bad. So I think it’s quite important to have nice hair. In New York I go to Garren for the color and there is a Japanese guy there that I love, who cuts it. And in Paris I go to Leonor Greyl. It’s amazing. It’s a very very famous place in Paris where you can spend all morning and they do an amazing treatment for your hair and scalp. And I use their products a lot—for summer they have an oil, Huile de Palme, you put in while you’re at the beach. And they have the most amazing shampoo that smells so good. I try to go there every month. For facials there is an amazing place in Paris called Joëlle Ciocco. She’s doing the best facial, because you get a full massage of your face and even inside your mouth. And in New York I love to go to Tracie Martyn. Also I try to get massages as often as I can! In Paris it’s really difficult to get a good massage and in New York it’s really easy. Oh and one of my rituals, as soon as I land in Paris I go to an Iyashi Dome. It’s like a donut that you go into, and it’s very very hot, and you sweat a lot. It helps you to detox of course, and you sleep really well afterward and get over jet lag. You know, I don’t wear makeup at all, never ever. The routine is to wash my face day and night with Joëlle Ciocco cleanser, and then a mix of products from Darphin, Dr. Brandt…I have a lot of different creams actually. And I wear sunscreen when I’m at the beach, with a big hat, but I try not to get tan; I don’t like it. I started in fashion when I was 19, and as soon as you start in the fashion business, I don’t know why, but you don’t wear a lot of makeup. Especially when you’re shooting and you see a lot of models, because they are wearing a lot, you avoid it, maybe? It’s a funny thing.”

I had to cross the Canadian/U.S. border on Friday, and I was surprised to see this sculpture waiting on the other side, visible from the border line-up. It definitely caught my eye and put a smile on my face.

It's my birth month, and over the past few days I've been interested in horoscopes. A long time ago I vowed to never read my horoscope, because I thought it was unlucky. When reading magazines I quickly flip past the horoscope section, careful not to even catch a word. But, I am fascinated with the general traits of my horoscope sign. It is so me it's remarkable (Not EVERYTHING, but I'd say 90%). What isn't me though, is my moon sign. I'm not even too sure how that works, but from what I've researched online, my moon sign's description it completely NOT ME AT ALL. If you know about these things, let me know! I am curious. shopping report: Club Monaco

Walking by Club Monaco the other week I spied a olive scarf in the window that got me intrigued. This past weekend I took a look, and boy was that a mistake! There were abundant amounts of stuff I liked. I went back today to assess the situation, and try on a crap load of stuff. I always feel a bit bad when I do this, because sales associates seem to get a bit excited, thinking I'm going on a shopping spree or something. Since Club Monaco's website doesn't provide pictures of everything (hurry up online shopping!) I took my old camera with me to take some fitting room photos. I apologize for the quality. The lighting was not too great, and I didn't want to draw attention to myself using the flash. I almost don't want to post them on my blog because the quality is so poor... oh well.

Oops- I forgot how to turn off the flash on this camera! Correct colours at least...

They had the cutest sleepwear- cami's and little shorts and a onesie. Unfortunately they were not flattering at all. A real shame, because on the hangers they are so cute.

I was hoping this sweater would be more like this sweater, but it just didn't do it for me. $129
