In Vancouver (and perhaps in other rainy cities?) it seems like there is some sort of real or imagined snobbery against umbrellas. Apparently if you're a "real" Vancouverite all you wear is a Gore-tex jacket with a hood. Well, I wouldn't be caught dead in Gore-tex outside the dog park or ski hill, so I happen to like umbrellas.

If you lose or break umbrellas easily, these might not be for you. But if you guard your umbrella with your life like I do, check out these beautiful options. I've had my Pare*umbrella for around 6 years and can vouch for its quality. I like to think of an umbrella as an accessory, not an afterthought.

New Rick: Outfit

Outfit

Rick Owens jacket, tee, tank, skirt (worn backwards) and boots. Zam Barrett bag. Wolford tights.

It's finally gotten cold enough to wear some of the pieces I picked up for fall waaaay back in summer. I had been squirreling them (and others!) away in my closet.

I wore this last week to meet my friend for lunch. A bit dramatic for day, but I was itching to wear something new. Plus, I've been marathoning RuPaul's Drag Race on Netflix and I guess it gave me some confidence to say "what the fuck, I'm wearing it anyway"

This skirt I've had for a long time but it just dawned on me that I can wear it backwards! Have you ever had a garment you discovered could be worn another way?

D.L.&Co.

D.L.& Co. were the first "luxury" candles I ever discovered. Back when Richard Kidd was still open in Vancouver, they had a huge range of their candles displayed in an antique armoire. I could have sniffed them all day if it wasn't so socially awkward. D.L.&Co. also has a great variety of specialty sculpted candles like my favourite, the Bust of Dierdre, that cries wax tears when lit- needless to say it's on my eternal wish list.

In addition to their candles, they have a number of creepy objects that are perfect to pick up around Halloween and display all year round. My personal favourites for Halloween (not including Dierdre) are the insanely spikey limited edition Thorn Apple candle and their large brass skulls.

I love these "Goliath" bone china skull lights from Alex Garnett. They would be perfect for Halloween, or pretty much year round if you're like me! A more refined update to those inexpensive plastic skull lights you find around Halloween.

There's a table lamp version available too- I think this would look great styled on a stack of books... on my dresser... I want one!

I follow Australian jewellery designer Alicia Hannah Naomi on Instagram - I can't remember how we found each other (perhaps our mutual love for Ann, Rick, Guidi, etc) - so I've been following her progress on her jewellery line for a while. She has now opened her online store and I am in love with quite a few pieces! I love all her rings, especially the rough textured, chunky concrete ring and in contrast, the sleek modern echo ring. I love the way she's photographed a few together- they look great layered. Congratulations on a beautiful collection!

I have this Noguchi lamp (J and I dragged it back from Tokyo!), and I love it because nobody knows what to make of it. The usual question is "what is that?"... it's like a little space ship.

Feathered friends

I've always wanted a bird feeder for my patio, but to tell you the truth, I haven't seen any birds hanging around my alley anyway, besides that one that flew smack into the patio door.

He must have spread the word to the others.

Ever since I was a child I loved wildlife- especially small mammals. Notably squirrels. I have a real soft spot for squirrels, and my love for them stayed strong even through the "squirrel phase" in home decor (put a bird on it, put a squirrel on it, etc). I wanted one as a pet so badly, that one summer, on a family camping trip, I set up an elaborate (or as elaborate as a 12 year old could construct with camping and fishing paraphernalia) trap. I was determined to catch one, tame it, and generally be best friends with a squirrel.

Obviously, I was unsuccessful, though I remember coming close!

It seems squirrels and people who make and like bird feeders are like two un-mixy things. So many bird feeders have "squirrel guards" but I welcome squirrels with open arms and pockets of peanuts!

Fab.com is featuring a bunch of Dutch designers, and found these fantastically modern bird feeders made with red cedar, ceramic and aluminum from Frederik Roijé. I would love to have every single one to hang installation-like in a little forest of birch trees surrounding my perfectly modern house, where I would watch the birds reclined in my designer chair through the floor-to-ceiling window.

West Elm Tray

I picked up this new white lacquer tray from West Elm the other day. It was in the bathroom section, but it is the perfect size to hold my perfume and a few other things.
