Field Studies

H. Lorenzo's first film in a series, featuring A1923, Boris Bidjan Saberi, Damir Doma and MA+

Next month I'll be heading to L.A. to visit my smarty-pants younger brother in Santa Monica. He moved down in January after graduating from UBC to work at a pharmaceutical company studying cancer research.

If anyone has any recommendations for food/sights/shops in LA, I'm all ears. I have quite a well-edited list going already, including H. Lorenzo of course.

Star Wars: Identities

Now believe it or not, I am not a huge Star Wars fan (I haven't even seen the most recent movies) but this exhibition put on by the Montreal Science Centre was great- extremely well put together and very entertaining. Last year they had Indiana Jones, which I really enjoyed because they are some of my favourite movies. Unfortunately the exhibit last year didn't allow any pictures, but this one did, so I thought I would share some. I'll just post a few here, but you can see them all in my flickr album.

I enjoyed seeing the costumes and models up close, but I was particularly intrigued by the character development vignettes. I always thought that the physical appearance of a character was pretty clear right from when the story gets written, but it turns out, at least for Star Wars, that the characters went through many different phases in appearance before they got to the ones we see on the screen. Yoda was particularly interesting, as he basically started out looking like a garden gnome!

I think a movie marathon is in order.

The Apollo

Apollo Sydney 1

Apollo sydney 2

I keep finding more and more reasons to want to visit Australia. This is The Apollo, a Greek taverna in Sydney. Concrete, light wood, original moldings and Tolomeo lamps? Yes please.

I love this long silhouette. Please tell me that model is standing on a box! I fell a bit more in love with Obscur after handling some of the men's pieces at a store in Hong Kong. I adore the gloved leathers and I wish they would make a J-pant for women. Come fall I hope a few pieces make it into my closet.
