Takahiro Hirabayashi

In Tokyo I went to Art Fair Tokyo, an art fair presenting a variety of different styles and genres of works from about 160 galleries. There was also an antique market outside the venue (Tokyo International Forum- close to Tokyo station) the day I went. I went to the same fair in Paris, so I was looking forward to it. While the Paris fair was all modern art, the Tokyo fair was more of a mix of modern and traditional Japanese art.

I was immediately taken by the paintings by Takahiro Hirabayashi from Gallery Kogure. They are amazing. The amount of detail in these is really astonishing- right down to the translucency and faint veins of the skin, definition of the hair strand by strand, and the intricate ruffles. They have a haunting quality to them.

The one above was my favourite. J and I couldn't decide if she was eating a heart or a pomegranate (I say pomegranate)
