centre pompidou -> paris

[i'm basically going to post about my trip in a random fashion, not in the correct order in which we visited each place.]

our first day in paris was a sunday, so we decided to go to the centre pompidou, a place we missed going to last time we were there. jon is funny, he says he doesn't "get" modern art. he walked around the whole museum with me, and from time-to-time look at me with a "wtf" face, or asked me what type of drugs i thought the artist was on. there were a lot of things in there i didn't "get" either! but i think my former art student life has taught me that you don't necessarily have to "get" it or completely identify with the artist in order to appreciate it.

i liked a lot of the 3d or sculptural/craft-type modern art. i thought it was pretty cool that they had some performance art/fims from as early as the 60s and 70s. some pretty weird stuff! too bad my camera doesn't have a video function.

i love the piece with all the images of mouths. something about parts of the body used out of context always gets me

wonderful images! i liked the black stuffed things hanging from the wall...and the alexander calder kinetic sculpture.

modern or contemporary art- i suppose we're conditioned to initially look for something to identify with, usually something recognizable from the natural world that's been depicted by the artist. i like to think of contemporary (abstract, conceptual, etc) as more cerebral....something to get us thinking on a deeper level.

i look forward to more posts from your trip!

amanda- there were all kinds of body parts, all in teeny tiny frames hung by twine.

silje- we did visit palais de tokyo, but unfortunately didn't have time to look at the exhibits. we were there for a special lunch.
