we got to prepare the food for one of the otters by scooping out surf clam pieces out of a big bucket into a little cooler. one meal is 1.8 kg of surf clams. i stuck my hands right down into the slop. then... we got to feed an otter!! so exciting. they eat really fast.

jon took a little video of me throwing in a piece of clam (while getting attacked by a wasp) the trainer is saying in the video that he (the otter) did well eating because he is usually picky and won't eat the little stringy pieces, but he ate everything this time.

That thing about the fur is completely freaky!
I did not know that about otters, thats pretty handy, my dog is always craning to clean himself, it would be much easier for him if he could slip his fur round!! I may be talking crap but i remember someone telling me that apparently a cockroach can live for a couple of weeks if someone cuts its head off, breathing with other body parts and only dying of starvation. I'm guessing the same can't be said of humans, lol.
So cute! This wouldn't happen to be the same otter from the famous otters holding hands video?
wendyb- i know! i didn't know that before. creepy but kind of cool. they don't have any body fat either, so the fur is all that keeps them warm!
xax- really?! that's pretty weird. i don't know if you've heard of the tv show mythbusters, but they did show about the myth of how cockroaches are supposed to be able to survive a nuclear blast and they could up to like 10x the radiation it takes to kill a human!
styleraven- i think it is! the trainer told us that they give them strips of foam that they wrap themselves in at night to mimic kelp. i love otters :)
cute!!!
